It's amazing how people will insist that something false is true even when shown redundant irrefutable proof of falsehood.

Pardon the lack of punctuation. I happen to hold some unpopular conservative opinions, but I try not to embarrass myself by making ridiculous claims. There is a rumor being passed around as a fact by some of my fellow conservatives, that John Mccain was pardoned for treason by Richard Nixon. This is a facebook rumor that has no basis in fact. It never happened and the evidence that it never happened is overwhelming! Unless there was a massive 'cover up' because of Mccains family connections? Anyway, they (my conservative friends off line,) are very angry with me and are now; insisting that it was reported on the news as 'fact'. I tried to show them that it was a facebook rumor that got momentum and popularity that had no historical support whatsoever, and now I am a "commie sympathizer". I tried to explain that it is counter productive to make obviously false claims in a rhetorical sense. The more proof I provided, the angrier they became. It's kind of a dangerous situation because the 'angry' person is my landlady! She and her boyfriend are livid because I told them it was "counter productive to make obviously false claims in an argument" if you have the slightest hope for planting seeds of persuasion. It's embarrassing to boot. It embarrasses me when my fellow conservatives use sensationalist falsehoods from social media to support their arguments on public forums and in conversations. What say you, (if anything at all?) ?

People get so worked up over politics it's almost a mental disorder. And the us vs them mentality is also strange.

If they can't face a fact and say that they were wrong, again that's a personality problem and one they need to correct.

But this is why I don't discuss politics irl and I not to on here because most people aren't mentally equipped to do so.

@puck61 this is one of many reasons I never get on Facebook. I do miss the memes tho.
@abe182 I fixed it so I would have to get a new email address to get back on facebook, but -GET this!.....Someone in Russia created an account for me. They used my email, and had me born in 1985, but I had full access and free use of the account. It was nice to catch up for a few days, but I decided it was too strange, so I deleted that account also. I hadn't used facebook for nearly five years, when I discovered my fake account from the motherland! What do you think about that?
abe182 · 46-50, M
@puck61 so weird!! I guess that's all you really need to catfish an account is someone's email. That's way too easy!
And more Russian connections, lots of smoke LOL

I think that if more people on all sides of the political spectrum did just a bit of research on what they are told then there would be less people following blindly. I think many people on the left and the right are embarrassed sometimes by their peers.
There are so many people/organisations/governments nowadays who spread misinformation that it's best to double check everything before throwing one's weight behind it.
I hope the situation doesn't end up working out badly for you.
xSharp · 31-35, M
@Wraithorn yes, like that public smearing of a teacher who was doing their job perfectly by ppl who didnt even bother to look at the evidence presented against them, that if read would have cleared them completely of the very accusation it was presented as proving. lol
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
@xSharp That's right. If kids are to be properly educated they need to be taught to reason and think instead of just following blindly.

MSM is propaganda.
@Graylight You know? Sometimes I get the strangest feeling you don't approve of president Trump. 🤔
Graylight · 51-55, F
@puck61 Whatever in the world gives you that impression? 😉
@Graylight My keen intuition! No matter how subtle, I can usually pick up on a vibe!

Despite never having been republican, I’m outright disturbed by how McCain been treated by his own party in the last few years of his life. It’s... weird to be so angry and petty over things like this, especially against those who spent their entire life fighting for your side.
@QuixoticSoul He was a human, a thus subject to shortcomings. Trump is a human and subject to shortcomings. I didn't like McCain, but I'm honest enough to acknowledge that McCain stood on much firmer 'moral' ground than Trump. McCain figuratively would be much more likely to pull the sword from the stone than Trump. My reasons for disliking McCain had to do with his politics and not the purity of his heart!
I shall tell you that which I think. I find it lamentable and wholly biased that when I submit a reasonable reply criticising the lamentable journalism which affects left, middle and right stating that it is they who whip all parties into an egregious frenzy against each other, uou delete that comment because it does not conform to your condescending conservatism. So, despite your synonymy in that claim of even-handedness, that claim is neither lucid nor evinces confidence or leverage, it merely takes on the jilted gavotte of transparent toadying.
@EugenieLaBorgia Wait, that wasn't directed at 'me' was it? I've never deleted any responses. I've always liked and agreed with everything you've ever had to say. Everything I've seen from you, anyway. We have never been the least bit 'at odds' that I knew of.
akindheart · 61-69, F
i read that mccain was not all hero. that there were massive failures while he was in the military. i wish i had saved the article..
@akindheart I was going to save some of that for after a respectful period. Yes. He was a flawed human, as flawed as most in American politics. His father's position played a big part in what the American people were allowed to know about him. If we had more honesty and integrity among our leaders and legislators, we could actually handle the kind of 'constitutional monarchy style socialism' that Scandinavian countries have. North sea oil money in Norway actually goes towards the education and welfare of Norwegians. This can't happen in the USA right now, because some stuff shirt's mistress needs silk pantyhose or something.........This isn't irrelevant. The same lack of ethics covers up the crimes of those with connections. Greed and a kind of 'cosa nostra' is the dynamic of US politics. We only vote for what we consider 'the lesser of two evils' every four years.

It how human minds work.

It changes facts to fit their beliefs and theories instead of changing the perspective

I find it more bizarre when people believe something is true without complete and sound evidence, but this is a great point as well.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Well done for being principled and for not taking everything at face value. I always ask for the evidence behind any claim. Its alarming that your friends were angry with you just for being sceptical of a story that they really wanted to believe. This kind of thing happens on the political left too.

If we are not careful, people of all political persuasions will believe what they want and it'll be just x bullshit vrs y bullshit.
@Burnley123 The basis of my complaint is far from noble, though. I don't like being embarrassed by my comrades when they build a story around a chain letter or a meme and start pushing it as a historical incident. It's like........
beckyromero · 36-40, F
They're deranged. Plain and simple.

I recently had someone insist that Nazi Germany was essentially already defeated by the "Allies" before the attack on Pearl Harbor. This at a time when the Germans were at the gates of Moscow.

I don't engage with people like that. I only post proof to refute their idiotic statements so OTHERS can read them.

As for your idiot landlady and her loser boyfriend, put a McCain poster in your window and hang a POW/MIA flag next to the U.S. flag on your porch or balcony.

wakanda4eva · 26-30, F
I can't trust anything anymore really, not saying in this particular case, but "evidence"is always twisted to fit a narrative, and the thing is no matter what, it will always be like that becauae that's how humans work, most of the time there is no winning in an argument but a discussion of the different possibilities

It used to be a conservstive movement with a fringe element and now it’s a fringe movement with a conservative element.

@SteelHands You lost me when you call liberalism Marxism. I am neither but you know nothing about the political philosophy of Karl Marx if you think liberalism is Marxism.
SteelHands · 61-69, M
You seem to have missed the point of what I said. If you can't read very well or consider it carefully when you read it that's not anyone's problem but your own.
@SteelHands Gosh, I don't see any need for condescension. FFW hasn't been the least bit out of line with you.

Not another word from me though, I've already stuck my nose where it didn't belong. Apologies.

The great enemy of Truth is not the lie - deliberate, contrived, and dishonest; but the myth - persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic. ~J.F.K.
@Echoing J F K was a true democrat! I know I'm pretty hard on democrats most of the time, but John was an example of what the democrat party 'could' be, in my opinion....Just as Dr King was an example of what a republican 'could' be.
Echoing · 61-69, F
@puck61 I never worried, nor care what title your party was/is. It was the man, or woman that I believed in.
@Echoing That really is the 'truest' way. My partisanship, patriotism, and ideological fealty is marred by my humanity. Like so many others, I succumb to my darker nature when my passions are aroused. I'm reminded of an old song with the lines, " Come all ye young rebels and list while I sing; A love for one's country is a terrible thing. It banishes fear with the speed of a flame; and makes us all part of the patriot game." It's almost the same as rooting for one particular foot ball club, except the filters of my perception sense an actual 'clear and present danger' when I consider the ultimate outcome should my political adversaries become the predominant political force in this country. Standing against the 'left' for me is like a fighting to preserve common sense and integrity, and the basic Judaic / Christian principles that my government is supposed to be based on. Unfortunately, I see the biggest threat to national security as being nearly half the population of this country. The consumers are trying to usurp the producers. The "grasshoppers" are oppressing the ants" This cannot stand.

For quite a while now, verifiable evidence no longer matters, only the opinion of the public court.

Buzzwords and insults have replaced reason and discourse. They aren't looking for dialogue, just validation.
SteelHands · 61-69, M
He spent over 5 years in a terrible place.

Taking his word for it that it's not what you've done, it's what you do, that is the measure of a man's character. This is all that needs to be said on this matter.
