You know how there is a communist party during the elections...

I know they will never win but in theory, if they did, what would even happen? We will just randomly convert to Communism once they get into office and once their term is up we would just magically go back to Capitalism? How would this function?
BlueMetalChick26-30, F
Ask a neocon and they'll tell you the democrats in America are communists 馃槀 Everything that isn't fire-eating propaganda bordering on anarcho-capitalism must be communism, of course.
Mugin1646-50, M
Usually, Communists have taken power by violent means. First by coup in Russia. In Eastern Europe Communist parties came to power thanks to the help of the Soviet army after WWII. In China, the Communists won the civil war.

In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the Communist parties in France and Italy did quite well in the elections but they never came anywhere near getting in power.

The only Communist party that won an election, in Chile in the early 1970s, was toppled by Military coup.
BlueMetalChick26-30, F
@Mugin16 True, especially given the emphasis on class warfare and overthrowing the rich. However, Ho Chi Minh wasn't exactly a Marxist. But at the same time, it isn't like the North Vietnamese were very tolerant of their opposition so that's violence to be fair.
Mugin1646-50, M
@BlueMetalChick The reason that the Chinese and Vietname Communist parties are still power is that they have been also nationalists. They liberated their countries from foreign rule and made them great again. Meanwhile the Communist parties in Central and Eastern Europe came only to power thanks to the Red Army and only stayed in power due to the Soviet Union. Without their support, they would have been toppled in the 1950s.

North Vietnamese Communists killed a lot of people.
BlueMetalChick26-30, F
@Mugin16 You bring up a strong point that a lot of people ignore, I鈥檓 impressed.
ReallyTallDwarf36-40, M
It would depend on how big their majority was. If it was big enough they could pass any laws they wanted (tax hikes, etc)

Once their term was up the country would be completely bankrupt.
Dlrannie31-35, F
@ReallyTallDwarf With its vast mountain of debt isn't the USA effectively a bankrupt nation already ?
ReallyTallDwarf36-40, M
I mean really bankrupt.

Communists will stand in elections to build a political platform and generate support, though winning elections is not their ultimate aim.

Their ultimate aim is changing the entire Government and economy into a socialist system. For them, winning an election is not enough because corporate interests would block any democratic road to socialism, as would the Deep State and the army. In their analysis, winning an election is not enough. Hence, they are ultimately in favour of revolution.

I'm a democratic socialist and I agree with some aspects of the communist analysis. On other aspects, I am really conflicted.
Burnley12341-45, M
@MorbidCynic I thought my post was specific on that and yes there are differences. I know several communists IRL and I'm very familiar with the nuances here.

However, most of the differences between a 'true' democratic socialist and a communist are about political strategy. They (we) share a Marxian analysis of capitalism and of the way power operates. Democratic socialists seek to reform institutions gradually using existing structures. Communists reject that as naive and think revolution is the only way.

I consider Bernie Sanders to be a Social Democrat and not a 'true' socialist because he just wants a more socialistic type of capitalism. I respect the guy a lot actually but he does miscategorise himself:

@Burnley123 Right. Reformist Vs revolutionary thought. Is our best bet the best possible capitalism, or an entirely different system with an admittedly bad historical record.
Burnley12341-45, M
@CountScrofula Two very good questions and difficult to answer.

Its why I and the rest of the Labour left to support a social democratic program within the Labour Party and Britain. In a sense, it's a win-win because social democracy is demonstrably a better and kinder version of capitalism and because its the best actually existing system that has ever worked. Also, supporting these issues can take people with you and build a movement for an egalitarian agenda.

I do think that capitalism is set for more crisis and when that happens, the left needs to be ready with one strategy or another. I do agree that we may someday be faced with the socialism or barbarism choice. Can Keynesianism work long-term in the 21st century if it is based on growth and industrialisation which no longer exist on the West? Can capitalism adapt to sustain the environment? Can you have a society run near fully-automated - which still has property rights and a free market - yet is not an authoritarian dystopia? It's my answers to these questions which have moved me further to the left in recent years.

They will forget about their radical measures when they see the interests they pay for external debt skyrocket, and blame capitalism, imperialism and free market.
therighttothink5056-60, M
The former CIA director John Brennan voted for a Communist. The Democrat Party is now full blown Marxist. Both parties in congress are globalists except for about 100 Republicans. They have already won big time, Obama took a wrecking ball to this country, wake up from your deep sleep.

@therighttothink50 oh lord 馃槖
therighttothink5056-60, M
@MorbidCynic do you know who is the answer to all the questions below?

Communism isn't something you convert to. It's an economic model. Most likely, a communist leader would enact policy and regulation based in communist ideology. A lot of people would disagree, but I think the country would be largely unaffected, to tell you the truth. Half of them think we're socialists now. Which we are not.
hunkalove61-69, M
In 2004, I wasn't about to vote for dubya but I didn't want to vote for Kerry so I decided to vote Commie. They didn't have a candidate. They said vote for Kerry.
CountScrofula41-45, M
They see it as a way to push their ideas but I agree it's not a very effective way to do so. Capitalist elections elect capitalist parties.
NorthwestM
There are dozens of political parties on the ballot. They range from the mundane to the truly bizarre.

None have a chance. It did not work for the countries that adopted it, and the proof is the Soviet Union, China, Eastern Europe.
MorbidCynicF
@Northwest thank you for your awe inspiring answer
I never thought donnie would get elected and I am amazed everyday we survive.
BlueMetalChick26-30, F
@SomeLikeItHot Trump really is not that much of an aberration as we make him seem. He seems like he is, because of how he behaves and talks and acts. His personal attitude is absolutely an anomaly but his politics really aren't, he painted himself as an "outsider" on his campaign trail, but now that he's elected, he's proven himself to be basically the most establishment republican candidate ever. As where some presidents were the bottom bitch of certain industries, Trump sucks up to pretty much of all of them. The oil industry, the military-industrial complex, fossil fuel companies, big banks, and so on.
BlueMetalChick26-30, F
@MorbidCynic He's not a new monster, he's a very old monster, but he wears different clothes and so we think he's something we haven't seen before.
@BlueMetalChick
He exploited the lack of popularism that Democrats traditionally promoted and some of Hillary鈥檚 past votes were normally Republican stances such as pro NAFTA, pro Iraq war and the ghastly crime bill of her husband in the mid nineties. I found her much more qualified and we would still have a regarded State Deparrment with her. I feel I am inoculated against trump now and from exhaustion I feel the same horror as if I鈥檓 in a parallel universe.
It happened that way in Italy. Moldova has been ruled by the Communist Party for a while now. As I understand it, their elections are free and fair, so how it might transition out of communism if they were defeated would probably not happen overnight
