Do you judge an entire group by the actions of extremists?

QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
It really depends on the group, its size, and how one becomes a member.

I won't judge a race or a religion based on extremists. It's too large of a group, and membership is too arbitrary - you're more or less born into it.

But say, white supremacists? Sure, even the non-violent ones. The ideology itself is dangerous, and their "extremists" are critical in the overall strategy.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP I'm not sure how your point relates to the original question and my answer to it. Can you explain further?
@QuixoticSoul I had the idea you were saying white supremacists were extremists. I was saying that a lot of white people do their best to disavow those members
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP I wasn't talking about white people as a whole. Just the white supremacists as a group. I guess maybe it makes sense to describe all of them as extremists though, not just the especially violent groups.
Miram · 31-35, F
When it is a situation that enabled a specific group to stop the extremists and yet they were indifferent, yes.

Indifference is as bad.
CaptainCanadia · 41-45, M
Well, extremism isn't inherently bad I'll point out.

The question is if the moderate is hanging out with the extremist, benefiting from their actions, and allowing the extremism to take place in moderate spaces.

In which case, yeah, I'll judge the moderates.
SW-User
@CaptainCanadia Sure, sometimes an injustice can call for an extreme reaction.
CaptainCanadia · 41-45, M
@SW-User Yeah. If you can think of any right you enjoy, it didn't come from moderates.
Some1Else · M
Yes because I'm a reactionary dumbshit who relies heavily on the internet and television shows to learn appropriate social behaviors and what to think about anything, beyond my control and view, in the rest of the world,
SW-User
Yes..why don't they eliminate their extremists?
SW-User
@SW-User I think every group should try and do so. But let's face it, extremists are loud and get the most attention. Even if a group denounces their extremists, we often don't hear it.
SW-User
@SW-User so the group/movement gets attention and recognition through their extremist..but it's almost always negative publicity.I guess they still see it as progress
VeronicaPrincess · 61-69
When the group condones their extremist's actions, it's hard not to.
lov2smile · 36-40, F
That's a good question: If I see a person wearing a turban, while waiting for my flight at the airport, my antenna goes up and Yes, I am concerned...what has become of melting pot?

On the other hand, a Muslim couple live a few doors down from me and they are some of the sweetest people I know. They maintain their family heritage and their individualism, but they don't scare people, lol.
SW-User
isn't that how we make the world better? 😄
SW-User
@SW-User So I've heard 😒
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
By group are you referring to things like skin colour or are you referring to things like belief system?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@SW-User Well it would be silly to blame someone of 'harbouring an extremist simply because of his/her skin colour. Since the only thing shared would be skin colour. However politics and religion are something you choose and you can change. If you harbour an extremest because he/she shares your political point of view or religious point of view then you are sharing the extremism with them.
SW-User
@hippyjoe1955 I agree with that and that's why I'm fairly vocal in denouncing extremists in any group that I belong to. I don't defend extremists; they're not my "brothers" just because we have the same political label or what have you. I would try and distance myself from them.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@SW-User I agree with you in the main however in eschewing extremists one must be careful that one is not being extreme.
Reject · 26-30, M
This is why you never become part of a group.
SW-User
@Reject I may be part of a group, but I at least don't let the group determine my self-worth.
