Harmony is something valued in East Asian societies, sometimes at the expense of personal freedoms. It is hard to find a true balance. In HK, I really respect that the people have initiative and guts. Here in Singapore, it can be rather sterile. Maybe we are too cowed into being civil. Don't known it is a good thing.

@novembermoon It depends on what you take as a necessary toll in your life. In HK they too work long hours and housing is really expensive, but I don't remember protests again that situation. However, Chinese interference is fairly seen as an existential threat.
