I Love Audrey Hepburn
This is one of the first songs in the musical "My Fair Lady", based on the original play titled "Pygmalion" by George Bernard Shaw with its setting in Edwardian London. The song is called "Wouldn't it be Loverly?" which is sung by the main female protagonist, a cockney flower girl named Eliza Doolittle (played by Hepburn). ☺
For previous context from this movie's opening scene, it is a rainy night when Convent Garden is still buzzing, and Eliza is selling her flowers for her meager wages when she runs into a polished Professor Henry Higgins, whose forte is in linguistics and speech. When he hears how Eliza talks, he believes that her speech is atrocious, and bets to everyone present that he could transform a flower girl like Eliza into "a duchess at an embassy ball", for instance. While there, Higgins also runs into a just as well-to-do man named Colonel Pickering, who also specializes in language. The two become friends, and as Pickering claimed that he had personally come from India to meet him, Higgins offers him a place to stay at his large and fanciful house. Unlike Henry Higgins, though, Colonel Pickering does not treat Eliza with disgust, and instead treats her with human dignity and respect, like a proper lady. As the two men leave, Eliza thinks of taking Professor Higgins's boast to heart, and decides that she wants to change the way that she sounds by going to his house herself to pay for speech lessons from him.
The song "Wouldn't it be Loverly" captures Eliza's want and dream for a better life beyond her hum-drum status as a flower girl. "Someone's head resting on my knee, Warm and tender as he can be, Who takes good care of me, Oh, wouldn't it be loverly?"
