Do Your Pets & Livestock Have Adequate Shelter During The Coldest Part Of Winter?

We are in the deep-freeze this week all week and probably most of next week, lows some days will be below zero, setting records for where I live. A news anchor mentioned how the cows have newborn calves right now and are out in pastures and the calves can freeze their tails off, and the other anchor added that cows can freeze their udders off. I can’t imagine trying to keep the cows warm enough when it’s that cold.

My dog lays under the heating vent so it blows on her.

@curiosi smart dog. I once put a chair over the heating vent in the bedroom that was my computer room, we had a cold front that came in and I propped my legs on that chair and put a blanket over the chair to capture the heat while I sat there using my computer. It felt good, the howling wind made the house colder even with the heater going so much.

During weather like this cows and calves need to be in their barns.

@cherokeepatti Some barns have clay pipes under small "benches" built around the edges. The clay pipes heat up with an external fire.

@4meAndyou I’ve seen rocket stove systems in houses like that, they have a duct going from the stove and build benches around them and them put clay or whatever over the bench to create a radiant heat system. That’d be a dream home for me.

@cherokeepatti we use a straw/hay bedding for the cows which provides warm bedding ... warm water is fed for drinking and heating ... a stove in the corner of the barn, burns up the dried cowdung+ stray woodchip cakes ,provides warming the barn as well as hot water thru HDPE pipes to my bathroom.
