My son gets mad at me for talking to my cats saying that they don’t understand me... do cats understand us or not?

Earlier today I saw my neighbor talking to her cat- as if the cat could actually understand. So I went into my house and told my dog about it. We laughed!

Does it matter? They’re your companions and even if they don’t understand the words, they understand the interaction and the bond to some degree. Seems a silly thing to get mad about.

Yes, they do. Not language in the human sense, but the emotions and sensitivities "behind" the words.

They don't have a talent for language, but they still pick up on tone of voice. They do like to hear their person.
My dog could respond to complex questions, but my cats will never reach the same level of language comprehension. They just aren't driven by the same things. Mine come when I whistle, and they know their names, but they don't really have the same want to please that you get with a dog.

Cats understand their names and they understand when you’re sad or emotional. It’s just that they don’t care.

Cats are experts at "body language". Now having said that, they might understand their name as well. If I call my cat by name and she wants to, she will come. Yet only if she wants to.

Well your cat doesn't speak English but can get emotional cues from you. pets generally like being talked to. Tell your bf to shut up and let you talk to your damn kitties.

Mine used to especially when I was talking about food

Cats can learn a handful of simple command words like come. That s it.
