Have you ever gone fossil hunting?

I’ve gone and found a few up in the mountains still in the rocks.

Yes. Mostly I just attended the fossil hunting. My brother wanted to become a paleontologist, and my father took him to every fossil location he could find, where ever we happened to be. I remember my brother find a fern in a shale bed in Massachusetts, and I also remember walking through the badlands in Nebraska, behind my father and brother, and being told to go back to the car. They finished up about an hour later. They had stolen a fossilized sea turtle, which is illegal. You must never remove fossils from the badlands.

A few years later, we went to the Petrified forest, in Arizona, and my grandmother was there with us, and she decided it was okay to put pieces of the fossilized trees that had fallen to the ground in her purse...which was also illegal.

In Nova Scotia I took a boat tour of a cave whose sides and roof were covered with the fossils of sea turtles. It was illegal to take any of those fossils. When we were done with our tour, I walked along the rocky beach near the boat dock, and I turned over a very large rock...and it was a fossilized sea turtle that had broken off and washed ashore. I figured...finders keepers, it has broken off and washed up on this beach. I took it home with me, to my garden.

Yeah, but geologist so it's kind of part of the whole field gig.
