I Larp

So, it's funny, like I'm totally comfortable with my friends knowing that I larp, and even random strangers on the internet. But for some reason, I just can't seem to tell my family. It's not some big dark secret, or anything, it's just I know some of them would judge me a little bit for it, and that terrifies me. Frankly, I'm surprised I've been able to keep it a secret for nearly five years.

Has anyone else ever experienced this? Or how have you dealt with that sense of dread of people you don't want to find out finding out?

My parents knew I larped but I was also an incredibly nerdy 15 year old when I did it.

However, I 100% get the idea of feeling embarrassed about a hobby that other people might not get or want to make fun of. I struggled with that for a long time.

Now that I'm almost 40 and it's easier to not give a shit. I've found that just saying the equivalent to "Yeah I play RPGs or whatever else that's my weird affectation deal with it" just works. They don't have to get it. Everyone does shit other people don't understand or approve of. We gotta just live our lives.

@CountScrofula I feel like I'm at that point now (hence why I'm so open about it here). A good time just hasn't come up with them lately since I rarely see them these days, so I feel like it's better to just not mention it at all at this point.

@FaeLuna Yeah I wouldn't make a deal out of it. If they ask or if it for whatever reason becomes where the conversation goes maybe bring it up so it doesn't eat at you. It's just a hobby, even if it's one you love and spend a lot of time at.

You enjoy the outdoors. You study fighting arts. You have a wide network of friends. You design (larping) fashion. You obviously have a sense of humor.

Is this really what needs to be hidden from family? I think you’re good.

@FloridaGuy Yeah, you're probably right. They probably wouldn't even actually judge me. I mean, I have learned a lot of useful skills thanks to this hobby. No sense in hiding progress.
It would be nice if my family would roleplay. I tried one time with DnD, but it didn't take off too well with them.

@froggtongue It's definitely not for everyone, I'll admit. But it would be nice if more people were into it. Like, I hear about these mythical families where that's their board game night. Instead of monopoly or something, it's D&D. I'm kinda jealous of them.
@FaeLuna Oh, wow. Now I'm jealous also.

@SW-User Yeah, I'm probably overthinking it way too much.
