First photograph ever taken from the surface of the moon
In the years prior to the Apollo 11 landing, both the Soviet Union and the United States sent several robotic craft to the moon, both orbiters and landers.
The first successful soft landing on the moon occurred when the Soviet Luna 9 touched down on the Ocean of Storms on February 3, 1966. (Prior to that, both nations had launched probes that took pictures as they got closer and closer to the moon's surface and finally crash landed, by design.)
This was the very first picture taken on the surface of the moon and transmitted back to Earth. There was no digital photography then, so the quality is pretty bad compared to what we expect nowadays. Still, it is a historic picture.
