I Have Very Strict Parents

When I was a young teenager 12-14 my parents used to punish me all the time for not doing the dishes in the way they wanted. I still did them, but not in the way they wanted. It always started a fight which ended with them winning. They kept saying: "when you're an adult and we visit *your* house you can decide we walk around only in Japanese slippers and lay the table the way you want". At the time, when I was cooling off after a fight I'd be lying there thinking: *yes! One day I will!!!*

What actually happened? Now I'm older I just don't care how they lay the table - maybe they were OTT

well that's the danger of overly strict parents and indeed any overly punitive environments - they can and often do just cause resentment and anger.. bitterness and the need to get your own back...

That sounds so familiar. Not only did I have a list of chores (including doing the dishes), my mom was very particular in the way they were done. One time she was yelling at me because I didn't clean something the way she wanted. I said "then why don't you go ahead and do it yourself". That was a big mistake as it triggered a spanking.
I'm not against boundaries and rules even punitive approaches to behavior correction like spankings but I think one has to really understand why they have the rules they have - there's reasons and then there are reasons!
