Has there been any incest in your family?

As a kid I always wondered why my mom's mom had the same last name as my mom's dad, even before they got married. Well, turns out, my mom's mom's dad is the nephew of my mom's dad's dad. So my mom was the product of incest.

Depends on the definition of incest. From your explanation to @SW-User they were cousins.

In many countries that is legal & not considered incest.

Indeed in my family I have two cousins, both 1st cousins to me and to each other. They are married and had two children one is now married herself with children. The other sadly died possibly due to a genetic issue.

To explain the relationship. My mum had a brother and sister. The lady is my uncle's daughter the man my aunt's son. So 1st cousins to me & to each other.

Btw it can't be that uncommon. My wife has a first cousin who is married to one of his first cousins.

@SW-User maybe just a thought I had.
I never fully moved over, just commuted, as I'm too rooted in UK culture lol.

@SW-User I can understand that. If your ties are strong, it's not something you want to give up.

@SW-User just spent far too long on London Boston route airliners though.

This is really difficult to follow. I think you're saying that your great grandfather is the nephew of your other great grandfather. Both were your Mom's grandfathers. Who were his parents?

One thing about my mom's family is that unlike me she never really had two different sides of the family, both her parents were in the same family since birth.

@ManicMicah Okay. If I were you, I'd do some more digging to find out the connection. I knew someone who's Aunt, his mother's sister, married her own Uncle, his grandmother's brother. It was a big scandal in the family. Lol. They had 2 children btw. One was brilliant, the other one, uh, not so much.
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@SW-User I mean, there's not much connection more i need to figure out. I guess I could look deeper and see if anyone else had a child while being related to by blood, but as far as my two great grandpas go, mystery is solved, my paternal great grandfather's blood sister gave birth to my maternal great grandfather.

Oh wow, interesting, now that right there is bizarre haha xD i feel like incest is a lot more common than we might think. look back far enough and you may start making connections along the line.

@SW-User LOL, right?

Reading this hurt my head....
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@wonderland63893 My mom told me about it. My Mimi and Papa don't really talk about that, and nobody in the family really talks about it or questions it.
wonderland63893 · 26-30, F
@ManicMicah Yeah I think you should do the same. There isn't anything you can do about it So it just leave it alone.
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@wonderland63893 I just thought it was interesting. I don't have anything against it i mean I wouldn't be here if my family weren't exactly the way it is.

No, not blood family, as far as I know.
However my aunt and uncle adopted a son about 35 yrs ago. When he was maybe in his 20's he wanted to meet his genetic parents. His biological father was traced so he went to see him. He found out that he was the son of 1st cousins. Their culture/laws/religion did not approve and that is why he was given up for adoption. I think this was a bit of a shock for him and he never did visit his biological father again.

My mums sis and her husband were 1st cousins. They got ecclesiastical permission to get married (back then) and even had a daughter that died tragically...

They um are seperated now though. 🤐

I dont think there is anything wrong with that relationship legally. I guess different countries have different laws.

Both your grandparents parents were male? I don't think I understand this.
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether Uh....my mom has a mom and a dad. both of her parents have a mom and a dad each. My grandpa's dad is my grandma's dad's uncle.
SteelHands · 61-69, M
No. Sometimes the marriage is subsequent to the pregnancy. Just because they got married doesn't prove the marriage caused the pregnancy. It could have been someone else.

@ManicMicah I think they're 2nd cousins therefore that's not incest and legal in all USA states. The chances of genetic issues with offspring are roughly same as with any random pairing in society..
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@SW-User my mom had a couple deformities with her ribs being a little pushed outward, but that's about it, other than mental health issues such as severe anxiety and depression. but other than that no genetic issues
SW-User
@ManicMicah my cousin's second child died for a rare skin disorder. She couldn't retain body heat. It's more that kind of issue.

Now with genetic testing getting better doctors can predict a certain amount of the issues between a couple.

My grandmom on my mom's side was a first cousin with her husband. Not quite sure of the whole story behind how or why it happened.
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@Viralwolfe13 how'd you go about finding this out? i find it's a strange conversation to have
Viralwolfe13 · 36-40, M
@ManicMicah my mom had some knowledge and told me her parents were related to some degree when i got older. My wife later looked into both our family trees because she was curious. I gave her all the names i had and she was the one who backtracked to find they had been first cousins.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
This makes no sense. Using the words 'grandmother' and 'grandfather' would really help. As opposed to, "my mom's mom's dad's mom's dad's, mom's, mom, dads'...🤦
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
@iamnikki Well my bad. AT the time i didn't think, I coulda worded it "my maternal great grandpa is the nephew of my paternal great grandpa". But I lack what you call common sense. I also kinda wanted to make it as confusing as possible tho xD my bad
ManicMicah · 22-25, M
I guess I made this hard to understand. My mom's parents, I call them Mimi and Papa. Mimi's dad is Papa's dad's nephew.

Something thankfully that wasn't kept in our family.
