What are your holiday traditions?

I'm not looking forward to holidays for more reasons than one.
But one is that no one really talks. Like it's always about someone, 'did you hear about so and so' or making jokes at others' expense.

I want to change that. One year, my cousins new wife had us play some holiday games. Name a Christmas song with [word] in it...name all Santa raindeers, stuff like that. That was a fun Holiday.

I think I will purchase some board games so that I can get myself and my cousins talking.

All people do is one-word you and stare at their phones the entire time. Quite boring.

Before we all started moving away from each other and/or dying, my family got along famously during holidays. We usually sat around telling jokes, stories, or playing music together.

It was weird though, because once I was old enough to really see my family for what they were, I realized that while charming and funny and seemingly likeable, they were all pretty terrible people underneath the surface.

Drugs, violence, alcoholism, theft, abuse, and fraud run rampant with my aunts, uncles, and cousins. It's kind of like that scene from Goodfellas where Karen marries into what she thinks is a close knit happy family who does everything together...then she starts to see how damaged and corrupt they all are once she learns they are the mafia. 馃槪

Which is why I stay far away from my family at all costs now.

The biggest traditions for the holidays for me are fireworks on the 4th of July, my wife lives to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the family so that is about eating, Christmas is about snooping for me. When I was small, my brother and I would snoop in the presents even opening and rewrapping after we played with toys for a while. I taught my kids to snoop when they were small and my daughter is the only one who doesn't let her kids snoop.

I'm typically alone on the holidays. There were a few Christmases that my sisters and mom came over and we all got drunk. Last year it was just me, and I suspect this year will be the same. 馃槥

Usually involves big family dinners with both sides of the family, and we watch a bunch of Christmas movies together on Christmas Eve until midnight
