Is it irresponsible to tell a young child he or she can be anything he or she desires once grown up?

Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
I don't believe it is.. I grew up in an era where we were taught we could be what we want to be, if we are willing to work for it.. I believe that.. it's worked ok for me..

No,but it needs explaining just what is really desirable.

Torn. Think of that chances of becoming a rock star. I know a lot of musicians who have given it a go and couldn't get a break. So was it an achievable goal? In the same sense, if you don't try you will never know. Be a shame to break little dreams. Or would it be teaching them how to set obtainable goals?
Given the socioeconomic disposition, talents and strengths of the child as well as parental social capital and access to opportunities--setting obtainable goals seems rather practical.@Dainbramadge

@AnonymouslyYours I have to say I feel bad even saying it out loud. But I wish I would have had obtainable goals laid out for me earlier in life.

Nope, it self fulfilling prophecy.

Good question.

I think the balance needs to be about encouragement vs. reality.

But setting kids up to make them believe the world owes them something, and that they're "special," is bad parenting via (probably) good intentions.
It is really hard to answer that.

My daughter recently told me she wants to be an actress....I told her she can be but I also told her how many out of work actors there are, and how she must keep focussing on body image and the truths of casting couches and money. I told her she has so many other talents and that she must have a back up plan
A grade parenting right there.🙂 She's truly fortunate to have you to help guide her.@InOtterWords
@AnonymouslyYours thank you

Absolutely not. It's called encouragement. My parents told me I could be anything I want when I grew up, and here I am, taller!

Only if you live in a country where that clearly isn't true by virtue of religion or politics.
Children should have their dreams. By age 12, they should know they will not become a rap artist.
I wouldn't say irresponsible but it would certainly be unfortunate.
Context is so important, yet so underrated.@EugenieLaBorgia

Yes and no. Having dreams is great but most people don't end up in a job they like.

Nothing wrong inspiration and positive encouragement

No I think it’s true. Better than crushing their dreams and confidence
