Interestingly, Leo Durocher didn't say "Nice guys finish last".
He was talking to a reporter who had visited the Dodgers spring training prior to visiting the Giants (Durocher's team). The reporter said that the Dodgers were a really nice bunch of guys
Durocher responded "So what? You could have a bunch of nice guys and finish in last place."
The idea wasn't that being a nice guy was bad or made the team worse...just that it was not relevant to how well the team would do.
