I Hate What This World Is Becoming

I learnt today that my tenant's wife and two children have had to leave the country and go back to their country of origin as permits have not been granted for them to stay. My tenant is all alone here, making a living from his IT work. It makes me feel sad.

Maybe only in first world countries you don't see such migration happening, where families are not pulled asunder. This is what globalisation does to us. And it is the third world countries that pay the highest price for what is perceived as economic benefits.

What about the human cost? As long as it is not quantifiable, maybe it will never count as a cost.

The first thought that comes to my mind is that with less globalisation countries would be less dependant others and would care more about developing their own industry and agriculture.
Then, immigration policies have to be logical. Each country must be sovereign to decide how many immigrants they are taking according to their social and economic situation. But what you should not do is to split families. If your tenant is there working, providing for his family, with a legal permit, I don't see any reason why his family should not be allowed to stay too.

Hopefully I'm not getting confused - I think America is doing just this at the moment so it would not be correct regarding the first world countries, but may have been generally up until the last few days.

I don't live in America but have heard about the chaos and protests at the airports. In third world countries, I think the problem is worse where entire swathes of the population, spurred on by the prospects of a better life, leave their families behind - spouses, children and all, just to earn enough money to send back home to get them out of poverty. It is the failure of governments to create enough jobs in the home country.
