I Like Beetlejuice
Everyone's Favorite Ghost With The Most... Hello there, i'm Monstermaster13 and one of my favorite all time movies is of course Beetlejuice.
So here are my top 13 reasons for liking it including my favorite moments .
13. The acting
Each of the cast members does a superb job of bringing their character to life (no pun intended).
First we have Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as Adam and Barbara, our main protagonists. While I do normally find Alec Baldwin to be creepy due to the fact he always tends to play a slimy villain type role and not to mention I still haven't forgiven him for those Hulu ads where he's an alien *shudders* , I do like the show 30 Rock though.
He does very well in the role of Adam and brings the right amount of sensitively and humor to the role. Geena also does very well in her role as Barbara.
Now for the Deetzes, first we have Delia who is played by Catherine O Hara (who also starred in my favorite sketch comedy series next to old school SNL, SCTV - along with my favorite comedian the late John Candy), she's just so crazy in this it's hard to not love her especially during this scene:
"Delia:
I'm here with you. I will live with you in this hellhole, but I must express myself. If you don't let me gut out this house and make it my own, I will go insane, and I will take you with me!"
Along with her in this is her husband Charles played by Jeffrey Jones (who prior to this was the prinicipal in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and also a year after this was in Who's Harry Crumb with John Candy) who acts as the voice of reason - all he wants to do is relax - and Delia isn't making things any better for him.
Speaking of Delia, the part was originally to be for Anjelica Huston but she fell ill so Catherine O Hara stepped in as her replacement. We all know that later on Anjelica would get her own doses of the maccabre as Morticia Addams and as the Grand High Witch.
The lovely Lydia is played by Winona Ryder, a goth girl who really is fascinated in ghosts and the supernatural and is the only one who can see the ghostly couple - because like she says: "Live people ignore the strange and unusual" and she by definition is very much strange and unusual.
She is wonderfully acted and you can really relate to how she's feeling.
And of course helping Delia give the old Maitland's house a makeover is her friend Otho (played by the late great Glenn Shadix), an interior designer/fashion guru/"Paranormal expert".
He delivers such an amazingly witty and deadpan performance throughout and has some of the best lines in the movie.
But the star of this little show is none other than the ghost of the most Beetlejuice himself played by Michael Keaton.
This guy is a blast to watch on screen and I hear that he adlibbed most of his lines in this which to me is rather clever.
On a sidenote, the scene where there's a fly being lured by a Zagnut candy bar has the fly screaming "Help me!" after BJ eats him. This is a nod to the original 1958 version of The Fly. And what movie did Geena Davis appear two years before this movie came out? Why the 1986 remake of the Fly with her then boyfriend Jeff Goldblum.
Interestingly one of the writers wanted to cast Sam Kinison as Beetlejuice, and Tim wanted Sammy Davis Jr. But we're glad they went with Michael Keaton.
12. The Music
Of course with any brilliantly crafted Tim Burton movie you get an equally as brilliantly crafted score by none other than Danny Elfman.
The score is superb and the theme tune is one of the best Danny Elfman compositions ever I love how it builds up.
I've heard it used in numerous other things including recently the trailer for Paranorman.
The first time I heard the theme tune was in an episode of Basil Brush, it was the episode where Basil and Stephen are scientists and are working on a cloning experiment.
And of course...the two musical contributions by Harry Belafonte - Jump In The Line and *sings* Day-O! Day O! Daylight come and me wanna go home! (stops) Oops...silly me, I was almost possessed there.
11. The Afterlife scenes
I love this movie's take on ghosts and the afterlife, it's really fascinating. It's like a huge industrial office type with a waiting room where you have to sit and wait for your number to pop up.
The various other residence in this are also interesting like Char Guy (who is a smoker/burn victim), the camper, the Roadkill Man, Miss Argentina, Harry the Hunter/Shrunken Head Guy, The Shark Bite Victim who lost his arms and the football team.
Then there's Juno who runs the place, her job is to keep an eye on the other residents and to always keep Beetlejuice in order.
Also there is an appearance by Jake and Elwood of the Blues Brothers, both in shadow of course. Hmmm.....I wonder if this is how Jake ended up after the end of the original Blues Brothers movie - if only they had explained it this to Elwood at the beginning of Blues Brothers 20000.
The way the afterlife is represented in this movie is marvelous and intriguing at the same time.
10. Adam and Barbara's "Scary/Creature" faces.
This is one of the first scenes I saw when I first watched the movie on tv, and it's one of my favorites.
Juno asks Adam and Barbara to demonstrate their scare tactics and they gladly do so by stretching their faces.
Both their "Scary/Creature" faces are wonderfully wicked, Adam has a very bird-like feel to it while Barbara's one reminds me of a crocodile.
A special kudos to the special effects department for pulling this off so brilliantly, and it's a prime example of practical effects being put to good use.
This scene was actually paid homage to in the Spongebob episode Face Freeze when Patrick makes a face that resembles the one Barbara has in her scary mode.
Actually that's the second time Beetlejuice has been paid homaged to or satirised in an episode of Spongebob, the first was the episode Ghost Host - as the Flying Dutchman's scare attempts are similar to the pranks that BJ uses.
9. The whole dinner scene
The dinner scene in this movie with the Deetzes and the guests including Otho is one of the first scenes everyone thinks about when this movies name comes to mind.
And for good reason, it's hillarious and very well cleverly made with some brilliant dialogue.
After the house has been redecorated by Delia and her interior designer Otho, including some of her hideous sculptures - we hear moaning and banging upstars, our ghostly friends aren't taking too kindly to this at all - in fact they downright hate it.
Which leads to this ingenious exchange:
"Otho:
I just hope it wasn't one of your dreary suicide attempts, you know what they say about people who commit suicide...in the afterlife they become civil servants.
Bernard:
Otho, I didn't know you were into the supernatural.
Otho:
Well , of course! You remember, after my stint with the living theater. I was one of New York's leading paranormal researchers...until the bottom dropped out in 72.
Beryl:
Paranormal? Is that what they're calling your kind these days?
Otho:
Don't mind her, she's still upset because someone dropped a house on her sister."
This is WHY Otho is my second favorite non BJ character in the movie next to Lydia, he's so cynical and sarcastic.
The fun really starts when Delia becomes possessed and starts singing to the Banana Boat song by Harry Belafonte, and the others start involuntarily joining in as well.
This scene is just awesome in every sense of the word, and it's a lot fun seeing everyone joining in including Otho using an icebox as a drum.
And for the big finale.....how about the shrimp becoming a monstrous hand that grabs you and knocks you backwards?
There's nothing more I can say about this apart from.....*sings* Day-O! Day-O! Daylight come and me wanna go home! Day, Me say day me say day me say day-o! Daylight come and me wanna go home! *stops* Oh man, not again. These possessions are so unpredictable.
8. Adam and Barbara's relationship with Lydia
This is what I found to be one of the most enduring on screen family type relationships in a movie.
No one else can see our ghostly couple Adam and Barbara apart from Lydia and that's because live people ignore the strange and unusual and Lydia by definition is indeed strange and unusual.
She has a very nice daughter/parent type relationship with the couple and to them, she just looks like a normal everyday girl.
This provides us with some of the most heartwarming moments in the movie.
7. BJ using his powers.
One of the reasons that BJ himself is such an awesome character is because of his supernatural powers, and this includes his shapeshifting ability.
He can use his powers for all sorts of crazy things including posessing people, shapeshifting, and causing all sorts of ghostly havoc.
It would be pretty nifty to have powers like those, I think that there would be a whole lot of fun to be had.
Like you could possesses your friends and family, play practical jokes on them, turn into anything you like, and need I mention the ability to do this?
*speaking in BJ's voice* Learn to throw your voice and fool your friends, it's fun at parties! *speaking in normal voice* See? Pretty awesome isn't it?
This is just one of the many reasons why we love BJ so much and his ghostly antics.
6. The opening scenes
The opening scenes from this movie are brilliantly played up, and feature one of Burton's best trademarks - a cute and cuddly little dog. Aaaaaw.
In fact this dog is part of the cause of death for our ghostly couple, a dog shows up in the middle of the road causing them to crash through a bridge and drown.
Of course, props go to the set designers for coming up with the breathtaking view of the scenery for this movie - and they deserve it.
5. The special effects
The special effects used for this movie are one of a kind, there's all sorts of crazy and unique things including claymation.
My favorites being when Adam and Barbara do their 'Scary Faces', the sandworms, and the shrimp in the dinner scene becoming monstrous hands that grab the Deetzes and knock them backwards off their chairs.
Especially as Otho is the first one it happens to. Wow, talk about a lively dinner party. In the Maitland's house, if you're not careful- the food comes alive and attacks you!
And also props go the makeup involved in bringing BJ to life for doing such a brilliant job on this.
4. The Deetzes and Otho
Meet the Deetzes who are the unwanted guests for this movie. I just love these guys and their personalities.
Delia is the eccentric artist type that just wants to express herself, her husband Charles is the voice of reason annd he just wants to relax but she isn't helping matters.
Lydia is the goth step-daughter who is the only one who can see the Maitlands, and also wants to become a ghost herself.
And then there's Delia's friend, and my second favorite non BJ character next to Lydia - Otho Fenlock.
I already mentioned how fantastic the acting is. Otho is an interior designer/fashion guru/"paranormal expert" who is there to help Delia give the ol Maitland's house a makeover.
And boy what a number they pulled on it, they turned into a modern art nightmare!
While Otho may come across as a bit of a snob - which he is in some ways, he actually can be quite funny and not to mention I love his sarcasm and his quips.
The way he acts like he knows pretty much everything including after taking the Handbook of the Recently Deceased - the paranormal, even though according to Lydia he can't even change a tire - is pure genius and one of the reasons why I love him so much.
His lack of supernatural know how comes to bite him in the behind near the end once BJ gets through with him and for messing up that seance and performing an exorcism that almost results in Adam and Barbara dying from old age.
And I can't help but feel sorry for the poor guy, especially after BJ uses his powers to make it that his outfit peels off to reveal a blue 70's style leisure suit. Not even I would be caught dead wearing that.
Sure he may not be an expert on anything apart from fashion or interior design, but he's a really entertaining character. Not to mention that his main outfit is black and red, both of which are my favorite colours. Also as a rather a spooky coincidence - I also happen to like the colour purple (especially mauve or dark purple) just like he does. (I even got him as a result once for a Beetlejuice personality quiz I took online, but I don't think him and I are all that similar).
And would you believe that there was an action figure of him made by Kenner as part of the Beetlejuice movie figure line in 1989? It's true. There is an Otho the Obnoxious action figure and it comes with a lizard that has BJ's face on it, also his head pops off and you can see his scared face.
Glenn Shadix truly was an underrated actor and it's easy to see why Tim Burton liked him so much.
3. Beetlejuice as a snake
The Nostalgia Critic already mentioned this on his list of Scariest Nostalgic Moments for Nostalgiaween a few years back but I think this definitely deserves more praise.
First of all, I love how cool Beetlejuice looks in his snake form and I like how the top of the staircase transforms into a snake.
Then there's BJ as a snake, holy cow is he frightening but at the same time awesome, again - another great use of the practical effects in this movie.
The reactions in this scene are priceless, especially Delia's reaction and Charles, as well as Otho as he tries to get away.
2. It's Showtime!
My personal favorite scene in the entire movie is the scene where BJ is summoned by Lydia to rescue the Maitlands, and he makes on hell of an entrance with his merry go round
hat on, which has a skull that is a very early prototype for Jack Skellington on it.
"Attention K-Mart shoppers!" Man, I just love that line. And there's also when his hands inflate and become mallets which he uses for a "test your strength" game, demonstrating this on two of the other party guests and sending them flying through the roof.
And when he's done that, he disposes with the Maitlands and decides to have a bit of fun with the others.
Who is the first unfortunate sap that gets to play? Why it's Otho, of course! Otho is
about to walk off and leave when BJ jumps onto his back and gives us this:
"BJ:
Not so fast round boy, we're gonna have some laughs. *kissess him*".
Otho tries to make a run for it but is caught by BJ, who uses his ghostly magic to pretend to shoot him - this causes his clothing to peel off to reveal a powder blue
70's style leisure suit.
Which to someone as fashion savy as he is, would be the ultimate nightmare come true!
The look on Otho's face is priceless, poor guy. Then again....let this be a lesson to
him, NEVER ever meddle in the affairs of the supernatural.
On a sidenote, scared Otho is now my current desktop wallpaper.
What else can I say apart from...It's Showtime!
And....
1. BJ himself.
Do I really need to say this? BJ is the most awesome ghost character to ever exist, he's right up there with the Hitchhiking Ghosts from Disney's Haunted Mansion (or if you've been to Disneyland Paris...Phantom Manor), Danny Phantom, and Slimer from Ghostbusters.
With his supernatural powers and love of causing havoc it's hard to love this ghost even though he can be a bit on the twisted and sadistic side.
Like I already mentioned, Michael Keaton does such a terrific job of bringing life into him that it's hard not to like him.
Plus....having a ghost like him around the house would be awesome.
There have been many supernatural characters that like him are comedic and have tried to be like him in some sense like the Genie from Disney's Aladdin, Fred from Drop Dead Fred, Jim Carrey as the Mask, Mike Myers as the Cat in the unfortunately panned Cat In The Hat movie, Maurice from Little Monsters, and to some extent Flabber from Beetleborgs.
What are his qualifications for this list, you may ask? Well he finished Harvard buisness school, he attended Julliard, he travels quite extensively, he's lived through the black plague and had a pretty good time during that, HE'S SEEN THE EXORCIST 167 TIMES AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING FUNNIER EVERYIME HE SEES IT - NOT TO MENTION THE FACT HE'S A DEAD GUY. NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK? Is he qualified or what?
So here are my top 13 reasons for liking it including my favorite moments .
13. The acting
