Has the option been explored to allow a user to create a group and have control of who joins it?

Wouldn't that make it more a clique, cliques are snotty, than an open group? You can just block the users that annoy you

The first has been extensively suggested.... but not the latter
As well as being able to mute/block by group related posts

Contact Nuno or Andrew about a private group. There was some not to long ago.

Go to the support page:

https://similarworlds.com/support

Select the option button:

° "I have a technical question about how to use Similar Worlds."

And request a private group in the message box. You might give your reasons for it as well.

I really dislike the idea sorry. I'm still trying to recover the shock of losing ep. Ep had open groups @SW-User

And I think it goes against the basic principles of having a support website. Ep was a support website. Anonymous so that people won't judge you and share your experiences with everyone and anyone online. A private group would make it just like any other social websites and apps we already have. Saying because SW was a continuation of ep and it's UI is copy of ep @SW-User
