What does "Redundancy" mean?

I know I said I would be leaving SW to focus on my college life but this is the only place I can really get help to understand certain stuff because my family is kinda in turmoil... Well, one quarter of my family as my cousin's workplace became redundant and he's lost his job because of it.

I wanna lend my support but I don't really understand it myself, please can anyone elaborate it for me, thanks?

Likely they were laid off because the company is downsizing. This could be due to covid-19 where a lot of companies had to close offices because of loss of profits. It sucks, but sadly, that's capitalism for you. I'm sure they could still afford to pay him if the shareholders and CEOs didn't get a big fat paycheck.

@basilfawlty89 to be honest I think they made a mistake, I went to one of the others stores belonging to the company my cuz works for and I waited half an hour to be served because there was no one on tills or around the shop. If I had gone into his store, him and his team are always serving effectively, I think they definitely shut the wrong store

@SW-User it's possible. I don't doubt he's a good worker, but that area could be lower in sales and they just did it on a crude cost/benefit analysis. It's not fair and it sucks. Does he have anything like unemployment benefits or anything like that to help him in the mean time?
