What does "Redundancy" mean?

I know I said I would be leaving SW to focus on my college life but this is the only place I can really get help to understand certain stuff because my family is kinda in turmoil... Well, one quarter of my family as my cousin's workplace became redundant and he's lost his job because of it.

I wanna lend my support but I don't really understand it myself, please can anyone elaborate it for me, thanks?

What part don’t you understand? Why it happened or what it means?

@Natasha9696 both tbh. But he said it was something to do with the store's rent.

@SW-User In the workplace when someone is made redundant it is because the job they are doing is no longer required. The job ceases to exist. The worker hasn’t done anything wrong, he or she isn’t being fired so they usually get a redundancy payout based on their years of service.

As to why this has happened.... could be so many different reasons but most likely it’s due to the economy.
