I Am Saddened By Ignorance

I was reconnecting with an old friend on Facebook recently. We talked to each other about how we've been and all that stuff. Then I inquired about her sister and she told me she had gotten married and moved to Florida with her husband. When I asked what part of Florida, she said "Rhode Island." This woman is nearly 30 years of age and has a college education... and she thinks Rhode Island is a city in Florida. So apparently her sister lives in Rhode Island, not Florida. She just doesn't realize the two have nothing to do with each other. Much like the time I once had to explain to her that Chicago, Illinois, Philadelphia and Pennsylvania were not four different states but rather two states and their largest cities. It actually breaks me a little, how someone could live in the US their entire lives, even earn a higher degree here, and still not know their major cities from their states or their states from their other states. That actually pains me. It physically hurts.

I live in little old England and it still happens here.
Should we blame the schools or their parents?
