Is it really offensive to assume someones sexuality/gender?

I mean some guys get offended if you call them gay when they're not. But if you assume that a guy is a guy would it be offensive? I am just so confused because someone told me it is wrong to assume someone's sexuality/gender like the second one, a guy being a guy.

It's honestly not a big deal, but I think it's a good thing to be respectful of other people regardless of what we think of them. Sexuality is a bigger deal just because assuming someone is gay/straight can give the wrong idea to people who wants romantic advances.

@TexChik so if you call someone who's gay a guy would she/he really get offended?
