Not quite true. Plants respire the same as animals, "breathing in" oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide. Photosynthesis is another process whereby, powered by light, plants consume carbon dioxide, like animals consume food and excrete oxygen.

You can find several links by Googling "plant respiration" (without the quotes. There are to simple layman's explanations through to more advanced scientific explanations of the process.
