Not saying it'll be a lemon, but 9 times out of 10, yeah. It will be. Ask about mileage, examine for rust, check the tires, peek inside the windows. If the price matches the age (older car, low price), it's what you expect. Newer cars at low prices are a no-go.

I saw a 2020 Lexus SUV for sale the other day. $3000. That wasn't a red flag, that was crimson.

@caPnAhab Bring someone that knows cars, like a friend or family member, to give it a look. Listen, it's old and cheap, you can't expect it to be great, but it will probably run. Maybe.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@samwithoutapath right, I definitely wouldn't expect it to be perfect.

Thanks for the advice

@samwithoutapath there are actually businesses out there that inspect a vehicle for you before you buy it

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Ask if you can take it to a mechanic and have it checked out.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@caPnAhab Also if they refuse to let you it will tell you to run lol
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@kodiac I know someone who can listen to a motor and tell if you are using the wrong motor oil, I’d hear him ask people what oil they were using and they’d say Pennzoil and he would tell them it was making a noise that he recognized from other cars using Pennzoil.
kodiac · 22-25, M
@cherokeepatti Yup a clear title and good report from mechanic is all you need

I once bought a beautiful van but didn't have a mechanic check it until I had already paid for it. The mechanic said the front end would fall off at any given time and it wasn't safe to drive. The seller argued and said the mechanic was lying and refused to take the van back. I parked it and about a month later, I sold it cheap to get it out of my driveway. A guy with a tow truck came to pick it up and once he had it moved, he knocked on my door to tell me the front end had fallen off and I was lucky I wasn't driving it down a street or highway.
Get it checked out BEFORE you buy it.

Research the car make, model, and year online for complaints. Wish I'd done that before i got the vehicle.
Noblety · M
I alwasy ask what engine it has. I perfer hondas because personally they are the easiest cars to maintain.
MrsZero · 100+, F
Is the car for sale. It’s important to ask that
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@MrsZero right lol.
Iwillwait · M
Has it passed emissions?
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Iwillwait that's a good question for me to ask.

I don't know
Iwillwait · M
@caPnAhab you need to also have someone place an OBD reader on it to check for past cleared codes.
How many miles are on it.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@Spoiledbrat I don't know yet. I've yet to call the owner.

But I'll add that question to my list
SW-User
don’t forget to ask ur intuition if its the right choice for you
MonaReeves86 · 36-40, F
If the registration is recent or when is it going to expire sometimes it’s cheap for a reason

And check the engine if you’re good at checking engines
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
@MonaReeves86 I see! The price seems cheap to me. So guess I'll find out when I look further.

Thanks
