It never made sense to me. You show them a picture of you, I don't know what this is meant to confirm. What information could they possible get about you from a photo?

Just need to go to your account settings and look for verification page and they'll ask you to take a photo of yourself with a paper in your hand with your name and other details written on it and then they'll ask another photo some days later
