I thought Asia was the biggest out of 7 continents in the world and Japan is an island country that’s part of it, at least that’s what they taught us at school

I'd ask your local education-authority why you were not taught Geography when you were at school!
A continent and a country are different things.
A continent is a physical-geographical entity: a major land-mass.
A country is a political entity that may be on a continent.
And Texas is neither of those. It is a state: a political and administrative division of a country that delineates part of a continent!
