Because it cuts unwanted, pervy messages WAY down, and also because I'm always signed in, but not always on. People get offended if they see your green dot, yet you don't answer....

Some people may get offended if they see you online but you don't pm them.

I've never cared about it so I don't bother.

Sometimes I just lurk, silently. I don’t want to offend friends if I’m not up to talking at that point.

Because sometimes all I want is the comfort of the names and the thoughts that aren’t my own.

If I am someplace, such as work, I may be able to read posts, or PMs, but I may not be able to carry on a PM, I will turn off the light.

If I’m here... I am active in the public forums. I always consider the green light people as those who like to chat.

Some people do it to fake that they are offline when they are not. Others do it to not be disturbed

Less crazy people messaging, private messaging going on or just want to come on read a little bit without interruption.

sometimes i pop in just to read, or to edit my profile, and clear up my friends and blocked lists of people who have deleted their accounts. it also cuts back on random PMs from people i haven’t previously had contact with in the open forum.

Because I might be signed in and have it opened in a tab, but not actually interacting with the site...

And the green dot might be saying I'm on when I'm not... and someone gets upset your on and not answering.

Or stalkers tracking you...

I don't know if that's true for this website, but it's happened on other sites, so I just turn it off.
