Hahaha! Depends on where you live I think. I grew up in an area that bordered on country\almost suburban...and there you better smile at people. But if I walked around a big city smiling at everyone...well it's just not something you do...

As a urbanite now...in a smaller city, I could get away with it now and then when you have a specific reason to be friendly... but all the time? It's as good as saying "Clueless tourist"...

Had an acquaintance who used to prettend having a coughing attack when he was at public and closed places, such as, the tube...lol! People used to come apart.

Lol! No when what he gets is to scare them. Although, people are getting more paranoid each day.
When someone smiles at me, I say hello or return them the smile.
