Was it dangerous to take mushrooms alone in the woods when I was teenager?

I knew exactly what I was doing with all that. I was well in over my head, and talking with the dead. Is this a place I ought to have stumbled into all on my own? I swear up and down that I've always appreciated the experience, but perhaps there is a reason why it's so forbidden. I am getting a sense that it was as I age.
