A close Russian friend of mine memorized his favorite tv shows, and then began slowly watching them in English. Knowing the basis and context, he slowly began to understand.

Well I learned the most basic stuff in school and then watched TV shows with German subtitles, then with English subtitles and then without. The rest came from just writing a lot of English stuff.
