BERLIN TRUCK ATTACK: A truck ploughed into a crowded Christmas market in Breitscheidplatz, West Berlin, on Monday evening, killing at least 12 people and injuring 48 others.
Early indications suggested it was a deliberate attack, with the suspected driver fleeing the scene before being detained by police. Local media claim he is a refugee.
A passenger in the truck, a Polish national believed to be the original driver who had his vehicle hijacked, died at the scene.
German police will release further details in a press conference at 11pm Tuesday AEST.

The mayor of Nice, Philippe Pradal, has tweeted about the similarities between today’s events in Berlin and the Bastile Day terror attack in Nice, when Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel deliberately drove a 190-tonne cargo truck into crowds on the Promenade des Anglais killing 86 people and injuring 434. “Same m.o.. Same violence blind. Same hatred of people happy. More than ever, combat obscurantism,’’ he said.[/i]
