What's a common saying that would instantly raise a red flag for you?

"I'm only kidding"/"It's just a joke"

Quit trying to dictate people's feelings. If you say something, learn to live with the consequences
• "I don't know," without allowing thought when in response to a serious question or confrontation. It upsets me, because often it's very clear the person does know, and they are simply trying to save face or buy some time to sugar-coat the next few words to come out of their mouth, not considering honesty as the first choice of conversation. Contrarily, the person could just be dampening their own feelings, which is equally disingenuous.

• "It doesn't matter," or, "It's nothing," when whatever thoughts and feelings the person are withholding are clearly important to them. Regardless of whether it's relevant to the conversation, I want to know the thought process taking place in the moment, rather than learn about it later when it's not as relevant to the situation, or worse, after I've delved into my own feelings and thoughts which likely would've changed based on the other person's response at the time.

• "I didn't want to hurt your feelings," a somehow socially-acceptable way to be a lying, self-serving assh*le.

• "I don't mean it like that." It's common for people to share misunderstandings, but, as cheesy and cliché as it sounds, words do matter, and the truth does hurt, and maybe you do mean it like that, and that's the way it is, and you want it to be different because you don't like my reaction.

• Things similar to what I've already mentioned--basically, when people try to paint a picture of reality they think I'd like better than the way things actually are. They think they're somehow "saving" me from something, but they're just saving themselves from having to fess up to the truth.

@Serenitree: Just deleted it. Yes, that's one of many statements to follow to excuse such a rancid statement.

"Suck it up"
Serenitree · F
That one is particularly awful when it's a mom telling an injured and bleeding child to suck it up. I really want to smack mothers like that.

'I'm just human'.

I really dislike that phrase.

@Serenitree: @Aidolovemostofyourthoughts: Or people that say they're brutally honest as if it were endearing. I find that they care far more about being brutal than honest
SW-User
@HalfCactus: Exactly. A truth can be delivered without hurting someone and then belittling them for being hurt.
Serenitree · F
@HalfCactus: I usually tell people who brag about being brutally hones,,to get a dictionary and look up the definition of brutal. It is nothing to brag about.
