Lolly shop ordered to remove golliwog from logo

Owners of a Victorian lolly shop say they are shocked a small golliwog image on the company logo for more than 20 years has to be removed.
The Beechworth Sweets Company uses the image on its logo and in advertising, but after one viewer complaint, the advertising watchdog has ordered the golliwog to go.
“It’s like everything in small business, you wake up and you never know what’s going to happen on any given day,” owner Sally McGregor said.
The owners say they won’t fight the Advertising Standards ruling, despite the company’s ad running for the past eight years without a problem.

Outspoken former Victorian premier Jeff Kennett says the ruling is political correctness gone mad.

“I am outraged,” Mr Kennett said. “I think it is just a very clear signal that the Australian Standards Council have no idea what they’re on about.”

The complaint claimed the golliwog was a “racist symbol”, but Mr Kennett argues that point.
“This is an absolute slur on these (golliwogs) that have been around for many years that were created to be friends of young people,” Mr Kennett said.
For Ms McGregor, she will replace the logo and hopes the Beechworth community will continue to support her store.
