You're right. It has become an accepted norm throughout our history but the thinking is that it's too complicated to alter leadership at the top when there's a financial conflict of interest.

But there are two things at play that I think will curtail Trump's clear goal to personally profit or have his family profit.

The first is that Congress can work to make the unwritten ethics code a law in the same way it applies to other government officials. The second, and most likely for the next couple of years, is that people boycott the stores that carry Trump products. That's already underway and I'm sure it will grow in size. Retailers that purposefully "choose sides" pay a big price.
