The fact that he gets defensive over you bringing up his online friendships says a lot. Assuming that you haven't been overly controlling or paranoid in the past (that would make anyone defensive, even if nothing was going on), I would say that he could be hiding something- even if it's just something small that he thinks that you wouldn't approve of. If you guys cannot communicate, calmly express how you feel, and seriously take the other individuals view into consideration, then nothing will ever change.
