I think the main word in there is "can". It's not always. If my man worked a second job and saved up to get me a car so I could drive around, that is amazing. If I had a rich husband, and he was just trying to buy my affection with "things", then yes, I might fall for the guy who goes out of his way to give his time and effort into fixing my car.
