As Robert Heinlein (The author of the novel) fan I was appalled at the treatment in the movie. But accept the analysis as accurate. In the original "Federal Service" was a ticket to a vote as a full citizen and the underlying principle was that only those prepared to give up something for the nation had the right to have a say in running it. Also there were reserved occupations, such as police, teaching and elected officials, which could only be filled ny Veterans. To be a Veteran was to command respect and to have influence. But it had to be earned by the service..😷
