Another lesson that needs to be learned in the US is how the Republican Party was so totally co-opted it now effectively exists as the opposite of why it was created to begin with.

@windinhishair It was a realignment. The GOP was originally anti-slavery, but they were also pro-business and centered in the Northeast. The Democrats were split between conservatives who dominated the South and more liberal Democrats elsewhere. The Civil Rights Act and Nixon's "Southern Strategy" moved white southern Democrats to the GOP and Black voters to the Democrats. Now we're seeing a shift of college educated voters and suburbanites to the Democrats and working class whites to the GOP.

@Lila15 Nice summary. When I first started voting, there were lots of liberal (mostly northeastern) Republicans. I have several relatives that served as Republicans in the State Senate in northeastern states. Those liberal Republicans are now extinct due to the realignment you mention.
