Well the Russians rallied around the populist wave. Their goal was keeping Clinton out of office, which worked at a time when people were looking for anyone who said things are not okay. Trump and Sanders are polar opposites but their politics were never the appeal, it was about a "fuck you" to whatever they decide the establishment is.

In 2008, you saw a lot of Hillary Clinton voters who ended up backing John McCain — so it's not abnormal to see this kind of thing. And more of them did so in 2008 than this time.
