I also have a grey tabby, she is gray with beige highlights. However, under certain lighting conditions, she appears to be mostly brown (flash photography for instance). When I look at a single strand of her hair under a magnifier, I can see that the strand is polychromatic. Considering the cats ability to change her body presentation (slinking, piloerection, etc.), It is unsurprising that her coat would reflect different colors under different circumstances (especially if she is stressed). Still quite marvelous to behold.

@CBarson thank you for your post its the most lucid explanation and it makes sense
I think I would have called the vet just to check and see what was going on with her. That doesn't sound normal at all and I wouldn't take her on another trip. It stresses her out too bad.

I think you accidentally nicked someone else's cat.

Awww, it's kind of an upsetting thing to happen but it's hardly a CATastrophe.

No im not delusional, this did happen i take very good care of my cat who is way more then a pet to me , this is a mystery im hoping you all can help answer . Let me add that it wasn t a sickness nor was it any substance getting on her from my observation it seemed to be a reaction of some kind or destress upon arrival she returned to her normal self

@Timbobajimbo Maybe it isn't the cat; maybe it's your eyes. Take notice from now on to see if other things change color, even slightly and then perhaps check in with your PCP or eye doctor.

I know something about this. When a Siamese cat is born it is white. And as it ages it gets the dark tips on its legs and ears and tail this is a response to temperature. The cooler parts of the cat, legs ears tail tip turned dark in response to temperature. Something like this can happen for your cat too. Especially if they have SSiamese genes

@SatyrService But it's fur. It takes time for new fur of different color to grow.
SatyrService · M
@CrazyMusicLover Yes it does! You have quite a mystery here. Any chance that something got on the cat? You mentioned you were traveling, perhaps some dust unfamiliar

Nah you're delusional

When cats get stressed they shed like crazy. I suppose it's possible it exposed more of a secondary color. Exposure to sunlight may also have a rusting affect. I wouldn't think it's diet related, that would be over a period of time.
Not possible
