It would be a bit harder to stop them if the USAAF already has bases in Spain though.
The logic is clear and cold: closer to the Middle East, but would also make Spain another retaliatory target as in several Arab countries. It's all right for the USA, some four or five thousand miles from Iran.

Trump is a power crazed megalomaniac, and he has under his bidding the military resources of America.
He made a similar threat against Greenland, but odds are he will not carry out the threat with Spain by taking their airfield but he will cut off all trade, as if Spain has to come to the US. China and Arabia would love all their business.
