I was stationed at Diego Garcia in 1981 for 9 months with the SeaBees. It is a very small island but we did expand its runway so that B-52s could land there.
I didn’t see one seagull but I did see the “native” cats and chucked that fought each other under the quasi huts! There was also Coconut Crabs which were deemed British citizens. Eat one and you were doing life in prison for first degree murder. The japanese were dredging out the lagoon so that they had material to build up the island which meant 1000s of cowrie shells were available in the wake!

I heard that a British court ordered that government to resettle them back to their island.
They should have great fishing when/if they are allowed to return to their homeland.
