It’s World Hijab Day, an annual celebration of the headscarf traditionally worn by Muslim women. A group of activists from the Ukrainian Association of Muslim Women used the occasion to bring awareness to the hijab in the center of Kiev, Ukraine.
Volunteers handed out flowers and answered questions. Past events focused on clearing up misconceptions, mainly that Muslim women who chose to wear the hijab are somehow oppressed.
The hijab is a piece of cloth that can be worn in many ways and generally covers the hair. Many women wear it as a sign of modesty, Muslim identification, or even just to be fashionable.
