Yeah, it's a popular scam, as old as the times. In many cases they even fly them over and then abandon them with no living conditions, work or anything. So they end up asking for money from home so they could buy a plane ticket to return home.

Sounds bad, as well one has to be cautious of being linked to a scam company!!

@Quimliqer Yeah, I think it threads some line between scam and legitimate business.
Takes serious advantage of vulnerable clients and vulnerable employees. That really sucks. Hope he can find something better very soon. Wish you could smuggle him out of there and go back to Denmark.

@OlderSometimesWiser He is still applying to other things, it's a shame he never got the IT job. That was a normal job, and it had normal salary too. Hopefully another one like that comes along soon. 😩

Unfortunately, it's very common for many western companies to take advantage of people who are living in countries with weak economies. First it was mostly about opening factories in China and many other countries, and apparently now they're doing it in other forms like giving remote jobs.
Since those people really need the money, they just tolerate it. It's not so much different from slavery in my opinion. This just makes me very angry.
If I were him, I would wait for a couple of weeks. If things didn't improve, I would just leave.

@LookingForTheSummer I think his employer is Ukrainian, but yes it's true people do that as well, but it's soooo much better to work for one of those companies than to work for this crap honestly. They pay salary that is decent here, even if it's bad in a modern country. It's actually the dream right now to find a job like that. 😅

A lot of places do the "we will train you" and then throw you into the deep end. $3 an hour? Damn
Nightwings · F
@WanderingHelplessly Minimum wage here in Ukraine is ridiculously low, but it's close to the same as before the inflation. It wasn't great then, but now it's like they're telling a joke.
WanderingHelplessly · 51-55, M
@Nightwings Wow, here in the United States, each state has a minimum wage and it'sway higher. Though depending on where you are cost of living can make even a high wage look like a joke.
Nightwings · F
@WanderingHelplessly I think the minimum wage here is $1.15, but of course it is also cheaper to live here. It's just very far from as cheap as it used to be. The problem is that prices have risen to many times double what they used to be, in just 4 and a half year. /=
