It has been renamed "dissociative identity disorder." And yes, it is rare, but quite real. It is usually the result of extreme abuse. And I don't think memory loss plays into it.

MPD is very rare, it does occur and has been documented through EMRI's. But it isn't very common, and it is characterized by the different personalities not being aware of what happened when the others are present

It's not real. But there's a disorder that has some similar symptoms called dissociative personality disorder. It's very interesting :/
