@Zebraz: I ask because I've heard that's how to become enlightened, by shedding the ego. I no longer meditate regularly, however; when I do, I feel whole and complete.

To me you take in the whole, everything you do keep it balanced as far as it goes. It's forever. It's all personal responsibility and meditation is a crutch.
