Yes, it can be seen as a very selfish thing to do. But each person handles (or doesn't handle) things in their own way. Some are simply unable to see what can be. Most people who seem to seek pity are merely begging for help.

That is not a very astute opinion at all. Severe or prolonged physical or emotional trauma can badly mess up the mind. It then becomes helpful to have supportive friends and to do a major reevaluation. We might only despise those who never make any effort to better their situation.

Yeah saying someone is pathetic is a lie as well..
That seems a rather heartless assumption.
