I live by Dr Michael Moseley's "2-5 Diet". That means two days a week I semi-fast. On those days I limit my diet to 2 eggs, a large serve of greens, one piece of (temperate climate) fruit and as much water or herbal tea as I want. It's combined with maintaining my usual exercise schedule.
The system is flexible. If my semi-fasting day happens to fall on a day of celebrating something with friends, then I just shift the fast to the next day.
That makes it hard to "cheat".
I think moderation is the key to consistency and success.
