Is lips' main purpose to get food into one's mouth, and kissing is just a fringe benefit.. Or are they mainly there for us to kiss others?

On another note; MWAH! 馃拫

Good question. There's no biological reason to kiss, they are not needed to eat... I think they are needed to make all the particular sounds that we make.

This is what the Google search turned up:
Lips serve to close the mouth airtight shut, to hold food and drink inside. Lips help to hold food between upper and lower teeth during chewing. Lips push food into the oral cavity proper during the voluntary phase of swallowing where it is ingested and prepared for digestion in the stomach and small intestine.
It's meant for that as well but people with thicker lips tend to come from places that are hotter. Lips also protect from sweat getting into the mouth.
