I make mashed potatoes by putting boiled potatoes through a ricer. I learned to cook in a cooking class back in the 1950s.

My mom taught me how to cook grilled cheese sandwiches when I was 6. I was making full meals by 10

When I make mashed potatoes, I do it from scratch, with real potatoes. I never use instant.

My mother taught me a few things about cooking, but mostly I taught myself while living alone in an apartment for several years. This was before the internet, so there was no "online" to look things up on. But there was another way to learn -- from live people:
either watching friends when they cooked, or just talking to friends and getting advice.
